For typography, I would use 2 approaches. For one thing, make the text part of the graphic, for another, arrange the text and graphics separately.
The right amount of white space allows for freedom of typography and contrast makes the content stand out.

Readers gain interest from the pictures and add to the reading experience.
In terms of typesetting graphics, I like to use this pattern: insert small square images in a solid-colored background. This reminds me of a photograph on the wall and gives it a more narrative feel.
